Have you ever said to yourself “I just can’t do this” or “how am I going to do this?” In some of our previous videos and blog posts we discussed how we should ask God to bless our plans and to give us wisdom and favor. Today we look at skills and abilities and if it is scriptural to ask God to give us skills and abilities to perform the work that He has called us to do according to His will and purpose.
We look at prayer and we take scripture from Colossians 4:2-6 In the video for this post we discuss how prayer is a vital part of walking in faith and walking in paths of righteousness. We’ve learnt that Jesus is the Lamb of God who has taken away the sin of the world, we’ve learnt that we need to meditate on the word of God and that we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit as to receive power to walk in faith and to understand scripture so we can live out our salvation. Today we learn about prayer and how prayer is vital in the walk of every believer and how without prayer it is even impossible for us to be an effective witness to unbelievers.
In this week leading up tp Pentecost this Sunday we talk about the Holy Spirit. Do you know about the Holy Spirit? Have you received the Holy spirit? Our scripture for today comes from the book of Acts and Chapter 19.
So you have taken your first steps out of fear and anxiety. You are now on the road to exit depression. You have taken a step of faith and you have decided to accept the Passover lamb Jesus as your sacrifice for your sins. You have decided to believe in the Word of God and you are on your way out of Egypt (out of slavery to fear, anxiety and depression); but then those thoughts and feelings start to come back, you ask yourself, is this not working for me?
“Tell all the congregation of Israel, on the tenth day of this month they are to take a lamb or young goat for themselves, according to the size of the household of which he is the father, a young lamb or young goat for each household. Now if the household is too small for a lamb to be consumed, let him and his next door neighbor take one according to the number of people in the households; according to what each man can eat, you are to divide the lamb. Your lamb or young goat shall be perfect without blemish or bodily defect, a male a year old; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats. You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month, then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel is to slaughter it at twilight. Moreover, they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel above the door of the house in which they eat it”
Have you partaken from the lamb? The lamb is Jesus Christ the son of God. Jesus is the way out of fear, anxiety and depression, He is the truth about you and the truth that shall set you free; and He is life, Jesus said in John10:10 “I have come that they might have life, and have it to the full”. In the scripture above (Exodus 12:3 -6) we are on the eve of the Israelites leaving Egypt (Bondage and slavery) The Angel of death was on his way and they needed an escape, in order for them to live, in order for them to be set free they needed to partake of the lamb.
“And He took the bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them saying, ‘This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after the supper He took the cup, saying, ‘this cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.”
“There is no fear in love [dread does not exist]. But perfect (complete, full-grown) love drives out fear, because fear involves [the expectation of divine] punishment, so the one who is afraid [of God’s judgment] is not perfected in love [has not grown into a sufficient understanding of God’s love.]”
If we are going to be free from fear we need to grow into a sufficient understanding of God’s love. In Chapter 1 we learned that from the very beginning the tactic of the enemy was to have us question or not to believe the word or in the love of God. We also learned that God and His word is one. We learned that His word became flesh and dwelled among us and accomplished all that He set out to do.
To overcome fear and anxiety we need to begin where you always need to begin; the beginning. Genesis 1:1-31 tells the story of creation by the word of God, the phrase “And God said” as with the phrase “And there was” repeats itself throughout the chapter. We quickly deduct that when God speaks His word creates. We also read in Isaiah 55:11 “So will My word be which goes out from My mouth; It will not return to Me void (useless, without result), without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.”
Staying in Genesis (The beginning) we also read the first words of satan to man (or to the woman for that matter) Genesis 3:1 “Did God really say?” It has been the agenda of the enemy from the beginning to get us to question the word and love of God towards us.
Prayer is one of the most powerful weapons and most intimate experiences any believer will ever have.
The world around us seem to be filled with a lot of darkness and dangers. Sadly we often look to ourselves and our own strengths or even other people (whether it be friends, family, doctors, security companies or even politicians). We long for a quick fix (wealth, weapons, work, works or even drugs) to escape or overcome the darkness. This is like looking to the shadows for answers that only the light of the world (Our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ) knows.
This post or message is about ‘taking back’ or more accurately taking up a power that is already ours through the salvation that is ours through Jesus Christ. The power of prayer. Prayers that will be answered. See God says in His word “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much” (James 5:16) and Proverbs 15:29 “The Lord is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the righteous.”
Who are the righteous? Those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and savior. ROMANS 3: 23 “This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.”
The call to prayer comes from God’s word in the following way PHILIPPIANS 4:6 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” and 2 CHRONICLES 7:14 “if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
What happens during prayer is that you are drawing near to God and we know that God’s word says JAMES 4:8 “Come near to God and he will come near to you.” During prayer we enter into God’s presence and what happens in God’s presence is “Honor and majesty are [found] in His presence; strength and joy are [found] in His sanctuary.” 1 Chronicles 16: 27(AMP) and My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” Exodus 33: 14(NKJV) also “You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” Psalm 16: 11(NKJV) One of my personal favorites is “You shall hide them in the secret place of Your presence from the plots of man; You shall keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.” Psalm 31: 20(NKJV)
