All of us are looking for peace whether you know it or not we search for it consciously or subconsciously. The problem for some and the solution as we learn is this; that apart from Jesus Christ there is no true peace. Perhaps we are sometimes unaware that we are looking for peace as we misinterpret our search for peace as a search for gratification or satisfaction and approval.
It is in this search for peace or satisfaction that people often fall to the lure of drugs and alcohol abuse or even the promises of the occult but because there can be no true peace apart from Jesus and no real hope apart from Jesus we usually end up having to graduate to a better drug, or sexual acts with our drugs, when our drugs and sex still don’t satisfy we fall into deeper or deeper perversions or others fall into deeper and deeper depression. Some think that they need more power and we drown ourselves in false counterfeit promises of self-help books or success or humanism or education or whatever idol we can find that we imagine will give us what we need, want or desire. In the end they all end up leaving you lacking and still without peace or the satisfaction or gratification you want.
6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is praiseworthy – think about such things.
I think it is noteworthy to mention that Paul is writing this letter from prison. Now imagine a cold, dark and damp roman prison with a primitive heavy iron chain on you and still having so much peace and hope that you can pen down the scripture we just read. You see Paul has hope and true hope can not be found outside of Jesus Christ.
We look at our lives and the lives of others and we see the mess, we maybe think that God is surprised by our mess, like he somehow didn’t see our mess coming. We look at the outside while our focus should be on the inside. It is in the heart and the mind that the battle is fought and not on the outside.
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the spirit is life and peace.
There are many people who look like they have it all together on the outside who are straight on their way to hell. You do not earn your way into a relationship with God, into His presence and blessings and into heaven; the only door to get there is Jesus.
The peace of God is only accessible through the grace of God. We don’t really like as sinners to hear about the grace of god because that would mean that we would have to admit that we are sinners and that we are in need of a savior.
Martin Luther said “pray and let God worry”.
